Fresh Flowers on Cakes: What’s Safe & What to Avoid
Pressed Flowers Cake
Fresh flowers can completely transform a cake, adding color, texture, and a beautiful natural touch. But something many people don’t realize is that not every flower is safe to use on a cake.
Some popular flowers are toxic, while others may have been treated with pesticides or chemicals that aren’t intended for contact with food. That’s why we’re thoughtful about the flowers we use and always look for beautiful, cake-safe alternatives
Flowers We Recommend
There are plenty of edible flowers that can create gorgeous floral designs. Some of our favorites include:
Roses – classic, romantic, and available in many colors
Snapdragons – perfect for height and garden-style arrangements
Dianthus – delicate, ruffled blooms for smaller accents
Violas & Pansies – beautiful for colorful and whimsical designs
Calendula – perfect for yellow, gold, and orange tones
Hibiscus – a bold option for larger statement flowers
Culinary herbs like rosemary – great for adding natural greenery
Even edible flowers should be properly identified and specifically grown for culinary use.
Flowers We Avoid
Some beautiful flowers commonly seen in wedding arrangements and cake inspiration photos should not be placed on cakes because they can be toxic.
These include Lily of the Valley, Calla Lilies, Daffodils, Delphinium, Larkspur, Foxglove, Sweet Pea, Oleander, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Clematis, Hyacinth, and Amaryllis.
Eucalyptus leaves should also be avoided. Although eucalyptus is extremely popular as greenery in wedding arrangements, the leaves and eucalyptus oil are not intended for consumption and should not be used as an edible cake garnish. For a similar natural greenery effect, culinary herbs such as rosemary can be a beautiful alternative.
If your inspiration includes one of these, don’t worry! We can usually find a safer flower with a similar color, shape, or overall feel.
Pressed Flowers
We also love using pressed flowers for a delicate botanical look. They’re especially beautiful for garden-inspired wedding cakes, birthdays, wildflower designs, and spring or summer celebrations.
Violas, pansies, edible roses, and other culinary-safe flowers can be pressed and arranged directly onto a cake for a colorful, natural effect.
It’s important to remember that pressing a flower doesn’t make a toxic flower safe. We still use only edible, food-safe varieties.
Sugar Flowers: Another Beautiful Alternative
When a specific flower is important to the design but isn’t safe to use fresh, handcrafted sugar flowers are a great solution.
Sugar flowers can recreate the look of hydrangeas, Lily of the Valley, Delphinium, Calla Lilies, Ranunculus, Anemones, and many other flowers without placing the actual plant on the cake.
The goal is always the same: a cake that is just as safe as it is beautiful.
You don’t need to know which flowers are safe before sending us your cake inspiration. If your dream design includes a flower that isn’t appropriate for food contact, we’ll help find a beautiful edible alternative, use pressed edible flowers, or recreate the look with sugar flowers.
